A statement from Mayor Lauren Sheprow on the May 29 Crime Incident at Harborfront Park Region of Port Jefferson:

On Wednesday, May 29, an interaction between several individuals in the Harborfront Park region of the Village led to an unprovoked physical attack which resulted in a non-life-threatening injury to one individual by another. Suffolk County Police responded to the 911 call as did Port Jefferson, EMS and Village code enforcement. The incident was contained and fully investigated by detectives with the sixth precinct, resulting in the subsequent arrest of two individuals.

The Village aided SCPD as requested and as needed to contribute while the investigation continued. At no time did SCPD express that it perceived the incident posed a threat to the community.

The Port Jeff Alert system is used for occurrences that include emergency situations or critical community alerts. Examples include extreme weather emergencies, boil water notices, and public safety messages, such as mass casualties, active shooter or hazmat warnings.

The Village relies on the expertise of law-enforcement professionals to identify if and when an alert should be issued when it comes to criminal activity. This incident did not elevate to that determination.

The Inc. Village of Port Jefferson is actively encouraging residents to get involved and have a voice in Public Safety initiatives and reform with the reconstitution of the Public Safety Advisory Council.
