DID YOU KNOW?

The Code Enforcement Bureau consists of approximately 35 officers who patrol the village in two shifts: 10:00am – 6:00pm and 6:00pm – 12:00am. The basic criteria to become a Code Officer is to have some experience in law enforcement, security and/or EMS. Bureau officers are trained to NYS minimum standards and many are active, retired or auxiliary officers. Some officers are certified NYS EMT’s. All supervisors have completed a police or peace officer training academy.

Training for the entire Bureau includes: CPR/AED, BLEEDING CONTROL MANAGEMENT, FIRST AID, NARCAN, EPI PEN & AUTO INJECTOR plus a minimum of 64 hours of on the job training with field training officers and Supervisors.  Training is constant and on an ongoing basis.

During the hours of operation, the Bureau has set patrol patterns that cover the entire Village including neighborhood streets, parks, beaches, and our playgrounds.  The patrols are in both marked and unmarked cars.  The Bureau also takes calls regarding complaint areas which are added to the Patrol Checklist.  The patrol checks are conducted a minimum of once per shift day and evening.

Currently, the Bureau is working hand in hand with our BID and SCPD with foot patrols in place for Main St. and East Main St. Our personnel and SCPD park the vehicles and conduct foot patrols several times every shift.

Within our newest outreach program, the bicycle task force, specific officers (who are also assigned to our bike detail) regularly approach and speak to teens about safety when riding, wearing helmets, the dangers of riding on certain streets due to the width of the streets, traffic, etc.

Code officers also regularly meet three trains at the Long Island Railroad that bring Port Jeff Village residents’ children, who attend parochial schools, and commute by train.  They also meet commuter trains each day between 6pm and 9pm.

In addition to the training and all our communication efforts, our supervision staff meets monthly for updates on recent activities including any code changes, updated policies or upcoming events that need special protocols.
