Port Jefferson is Once Again Known as “Seawolves Country”

PORT JEFFERSON, NY, April 26, 2024 — In a public presentation at the April 24, 2024 Board of Trustees meeting, the Board once again officially declared that the Inc. Village of Port Jefferson “Seawolves Country”. 

The proclamation (content embedded below), which highlights the long-standing and mutually beneficial association between Stony Brook University and the Village of Port Jefferson, welcomes students, faculty and staff to “live, learn, work and enjoy all that the Village of Port Jefferson has to offer.”

Several prominent representatives from Stony Brook University attended the presentation, including President Maurie McInnis who accepted the proclamation; Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital, Carol Gomes; Vice President for Student Affairs, Rick Gatteau; and Director of Athletics, Shawn Heilbron and Sr. Vice President of Government and Community Relations, Judy Greiman.

“I fully expect the Proclamation to further bolster the symbiotic relationship that already exists between the Village and the University,” said Mayor Sheprow. “Signs and banners proclaiming Port Jeff as Seawolves Country will appear at gateway locations to the Village, and enhanced relationships with students, faculty and staff will be integral to the expanding relationship.”

“On behalf of everybody who is here, our students, but really the entire Stony Brook community, I could not be more excited to accept, on behalf of Stony Brook University, this great proclamation, and, ‘Go Seawolves!’” said McInnis.

The declaration welcomed Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine students, faculty and staff to live, learn, work and enjoy all the village offers. It noted the university’s status as New York State’s flagship university and No. 1 public university, the number of faculty, staff and students who live in the Port Jefferson area, Stony Brook Medicine’s leadership in local healthcare, the university’s longtime membership in the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, and the strong relationship Stony Brook has had with the village over many years. Approximately 250 students and 500 faculty and staff also live in Port Jefferson.

Whereas, Stony Brook University is New York’s #1 Public University, and has earned its highest-ever rankings from the U.S. News and World Report, and

Whereas, Stony Brook University Hospital became our region’s first academic medical center over four decades ago, and Stony Brook Medicine has consistently been a leader in health care, and

Whereas, The relationship between Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine and the Village of Port Jefferson continues to grow and expand, with more than 500 faculty and staff and nearly 250 students living in Port Jefferson, and

Whereas, The Stony Brook campus brings internships and research to Port Jefferson to improve the health of its residents and the larger community, and

Whereas, Stony Brook has been a long-standing member of the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, and has been a partner/supporter of countless Port Jefferson events and traditions, and

Whereas, Port Jefferson Harbor is the home of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (SoMAS) Research Vessel, the Seawolf, which provides a valuable service region-wide through research, large-scale oceanographic sampling and trawling, and

Whereas, The Village Center in Port Jefferson is a venue for various Stony Brook activities, including OLLI classes and Stony Brook Foundation events, and

Whereas, Port Jefferson EMS houses a unique residential paramedic training program to help ready Stony Brook students for successful careers in medicine;

Therefore be it resolved that the Village of Port Jefferson hereby declares the Village to be “Seawolves Country”, welcoming Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine students, faculty and staff to live, learn, work and enjoy all that the Village of Port Jefferson has to offer, including patronizing the Village’s restaurants, bars, stores and lodging establishments, helping to drive economic growth and helping the Village to flourish.
