Description The Port Jefferson schoolhouse, located at the corner of High and Spring streets, burned to the ground on July 3, 1913. Many villagers believed that local youths had broken into the building and planned to welcome the Fourth by ringing the school bell at midnight but accidentally started the fire while lighting their way with matches. Residents also wondered if the blaze was the work of an arsonist. Although a suspect was held for the Suffolk County grand jury, it declined to indict him. The cause of the fire remains a mystery.
